The CPA vas an independent special court which, on appeal, reviewed decisions by the Patent and Registration Office, in matters of patents, trademarks, designs, personal names and authorisations to publish periodicals, as well as decisions by the Board of Agriculture in matters of plant varieties. Decisions by the CPA were appealable to the Supreme Administrative Court, and considered by said court if review dispensation is granted. The CPA was closed down on 1 september 2016.

The CPA was located in Stockholm at Karlavägen 108 in one of the buildings erected in the 1960´s. It was located next to the building complex from the late nineteenth century for the now moved Svea and Göta Royal Guard Regiments.
